Academic Staff Union of Universities met across the
country on Thursday to consider the offer by the
Federal Government.
The ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Faggae after a
meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan which
ended in the early hours of Tuesday had told
reporters that the union would take back an
undisclosed message to their members.
The PUNCH gathered that the striking public
universities lecturers met in the nine zones of ASUU
with branch chairmen to discuss the outcome of the
meeting with the President.
The meetings presided over by zonal coordinators
afforded them (zonal coordinators) the opportunity
to brief the branch chairmen about the offer made
by the Federal Government to revamp the public
universities across the country.
The Federal Government had at the last Tuesday
marathon meeting agreed to inject N1.1tn into the
universities over the next five years. The money,
the Federal Government promised, would be
released at the rate of N220bn annually starting
from 2014.
The Ibadan zone of ASUU held its meeting at the
Federal University Abeokuta on Thursday while that
of the North Central Zone took place at the Federal
University, Lokoja, Kogi State.
Sources at both meetings said that though the union
officials were not happy that the N400bn per year
they asked for was not granted, they were however
happy at the sincerity of purpose displayed by
President Jonathan.
Though they expressed varied opinion about the
offer, they were unanimous in commending
Jonathan for being the first Nigerian leader to meet
with the union.
When contacted, the Coordinator of the North
Central Zone, Dr. Suleiman Mohammad declined
comments on the meeting.
Mohammed, who said he was attending to some
pressing issues, said only the ASUU President could
speak on the issue.
But feelers across the zones, however, suggested
that the lecturers might have accepted the offer of
the government.
Although branch chairmen still have to call
congresses, it was gathered that the union may
have made up its mind to call off the strike after
meeting with the Federal Government again next
week.
A top official of the union said "We are happy with
the humility shown by Jonathan to personally meet
with us. This is the first time a sitting President will
meet with the union to thrash out issues. Members
were impressed with him and the strong
commitment that he displayed. But some expressed
fear that the new deal could go the way of past
agreements that were not honoured.

How to arrange living room furniture
From family game nights to book club gatherings,
the living room is a social hub. The proper
placement of the room's furniture goes a long way
toward making the space feel welcoming. Nothing
is worse than a living room -- no matter how
attractive -- where people have to perch against the
walls, as if stuck there by magnetic force. Rather,
push seating together so everyone can sit close and
converse comfortably.
Where to position this grouping depends on the
natural focal point of the space. In some rooms, this
is architectural, such as a fireplace or a set of
windows. In other living rooms, the focal point is a
television. Once you determine this feature, orient
the seating toward it. This feature now has the
attracting qualities the walls used to -- let the
furniture gravitate there.
Flexibility
How to arrange the living room furniture is up to
you and your particular pieces. Most of us have a
sofa and another chair or two, which we can
position and reposition as often as we like. When
trying out each new arrangement, make sure to
allow enough space between furniture corners so
people can swish past in search of a comfy spot.
And give everyone a reachable drink rest, even if
it's just a stack of books on the ottoman.
Straight On
The most basic and functional furniture
arrangement is to place the sofa across from the
focal point with all other pieces angled to face the
same direction. This allows everyone a good look at
the television or crackling fire. When entertaining,
round the grouping into a conversational circle by
adding ottomans or pillow poufs that face back at
the sofa.
Passing Through
For spaces with multiple doorways, draw an
imaginary line that angles through the room from
opening to opening, creating a straight trail between
furniture pieces. This dynamic arrangement of
furniture keeps the focal point in mind but also
directs people through the space. Blocking the
corners of the room like this can be helpful when
you have children's toys or hobby supplies you'd
like to hide.
Around the Corner
When a sectional sofa is your primary seating, you
might be tempted to push it into the corner of the
room and call it a day. But this can feel
claustrophobic, especially to those people seated on
the deepest cushions. Pull it away from the wall to
let light and air flow around it. Place a brightening
lamp or slender console table at the back, and put
any other seating in position to see people seated
at both ends of the L.
Classic Symmetry
A traditional and popular furniture arrangement is
the face-to-face stance. Two sofas (or a sofa and a
pair of chairs) sit directly across from one another,
with the focal point at one end. Positioning the
seating this way facilitates conversation because no
one has a direct view of the focal point. It's useful
when activities such as reading, working on a
laptop, or listening to music are just as important as
watching television.

F00TBALl LATEST INFO
Joan Rodrigo Silva Santos didn't come home Monday
night.
When the former professional footballer's wife
opened the door on her way to work the next
morning, she found his severed head on their front
step.
The head was inside a backpack, police said. Santos'
eyes and tongue had been gouged out, according to
Brazilian media reports.
Player stabbed, referee dismembered over soccer
quarrel in Brazil
Now police in Rio de Janeiro are investigating the
grisly killing, though they haven't said who they
believe is behind it.
Santos, 35, was a forward for a number of mostly
second-tier Rio de Janeiro football teams before
retiring and opening a health foods store.
His death comes at a time when football fans
worldwide are shifting their focus toward Brazil,
which will host the World Cup in 2014.
One police official told Brazil's O Globo newspaper
that authorities are investigating whether a recent
post on the store's Facebook page could be
connected to the crime. The post showed
surveillance footage and asked for help catching
shoplifters.
Police plan to compare the images to surveillance
footage taken at the shop Monday night, chief
homicide investigator Rafael Rangel told the
newspaper.
The former football player was last seen Monday
night, when two suspects entered his vehicle, CNN
affiliate TV Record reported.
On Wednesday morning, police said they found parts
of a man's body in a river outside the city and were
testing the DNA to see whether the remains belong
to Santos, TV Record said.
Authorities have interviewed 10 witnesses so far in
the case, police said.
According to local media, Santos' wife, Geisa Silva,
worked for the police in one of Rio's shantytowns,
but as a social worker giving swimming lessons to
children, not as a policewoman.
She told investigators she did not know of any
threats made against her husband, according to TV
Record.
Some of Santos' relatives and neighbors told O Globo
that he didn't have any enemies and said they didn't
know what could have motivated the attack.
Brazil boosts World Cup security budget as crime
rises
Santos started his football career when he was 16
years old, and played for several Brazilian club
teams. He played for the Bangu club team from 1996
to 2005, according to a biography on the club's
unofficial website.
In 1998, he played for Honduras' Olimpia club. And in
2003 he played for Sweden's Oster club, the website
says.
The website calls Santos a "humble hero," describing
how goals he scored brought victory to another club
team he joined.
According to the FutRio.net football news site, Santos
left the field earlier this year to focus on his
business.
The site reported that club players in Rio de Janeiro
on Wednesday honored Santos with a minute of
silence.

I Was Dethroned Because I Refused To Have SEX With The Director – Miss United Nations Nigeria 2013
It all started when I got the Franchise for participation at the Miss
United Nations Pageant on the 17th to 18th of April 2013. Because I was
getting late for everything, they immediately forwarded my invitation
letter and other documents to facilitate my VISA application.
In addition, they assigned to me an African Director whose job was to make sure I secure a Tourist Visa to Mexico were the finals would take place. I had all his details sent to me and I contacted him and we started working. First he sent me Embassy requirements which I met but one thing never went well with me.

The Africanist Aesthetic in American Dance Forms
The Africanist Aesthetic and American Dance Forms
The history of globalization and cultural hybridization goes back through time as long as people from different places have been interacting with each other. Through trade of all kinds, people all over the world have been sharing their practices with others and taking in those of others. Since dance embodies many cultural attitudes, it is one way to look at the effects of globalization. Through slavery American dance was influenced by African dance, and in turn the African slaves were influenced by the dances already performed in this country. This can be seen in many dance forms created and altered in the United States.
History
The Africanist Aesthetic, as seen in American dance, is not any particular aesthetic of any one group of people from Africa, but rather is a blend of common elements across many different groups. According to Katrina Hazzard-Gordon, this blending and creation of an African-American culture came about because of homogenization of slave life.
[1] Since the beginning of slavery in the United States, groups of Africans had been split up. No one group with a common language or cultural practices were kept together, which lead to cultural hybridization even in the early history of slavery. With the invention of the cotton gin, many plantations that had previously grown indigo or tobacco began to grow cotton because this device made it so much easier to produce. Since almost all slaves were doing the same work, the shared practices were the basis for what Hazzard-Gordon calls, “a fairly stable, homogeneous, dominant cultural variant.”[2] The final force that Hazzard-Gordon cites is the outlaw of the slave trade in the early 1800’s. Since no, or almost no, new slaves were being brought into the United States and the percentage of slaves that were born in the United States was becoming the majority, the people were becoming further and further removed from their home culture with and had no way to recover what had been lost.

The Old and the New
It is still the same thing but there is no situation in life that is static, so there will always be changes that are occasioned by several factors in Nigeria theatre. Looking at the Nigerian theatre, the first recorded aspect, started with the Alarinjo theatre, which was part of what transpired among the Yorubas in Oyo. Alarinjo people were constantly on the move while doing their dances and performances. Things have gone from the traditional setting of the theatre among the Yorubas. Among the Igbos, there was also the masquerade theatre, which also thrived very much in the pre-colonial period. Among the Hausas, there was what was commonly referred to as Wasa Kwayo- which is the play making process of theatre READ ON.

HOLLYWOOD CRAZE FOR ANKARA.
Once upon a time, the Ankara fabric was considered to be the official
clothing of poor people. The affluent hardly ever wore Ankara, and even
when they did, it would be because of an occasion or event, not because
they desired to. That has however changed.
Ankara is now not only worn by the rich, it has gone international. Many stars, home and abroad, now rock the Ankara fabric in different types of modern designs. Ankara is now being made into beach shorts, pants, playsuits, evening dresses.
Ankara accessories are now the reigning fad. Bangles, slippers, purses, earrings, shoes, you name it! If it’s a popular accessory, it definitely has an Ankara alternative.READ MORE.
